Air Conditioning in the Springfield Area
No matter how hot it is outside, keep cool inside. Jon Wayne Heating & Air will help you keep your home cool and comfortable all year long. There are many things to consider when looking to repair, replace or install an air conditioning unit. We will help guide you to the best decision for your situation.
Types of Air conditioners
There are four primary types of air conditioners, split systems, heat pumps, packaged central air conditioners, and ductless mini-split systems.
- The most common kind of air conditioner is the split system. This system splits the work. The evaporator coil inside removes moisture and heat from the air. A condenser coil and compressor, located outside of the house, releases the heat and pumps refrigerant between the two coils.
- The heat pump is similar to the split system except that it can be used to draw heat from the outside to heat up the indoors.
- The packaged central air conditioner holds all of the components in a single unit and utilizes ducts running throughout the house to circulate cool air.
- A ductless mini-system works like a split system. It is usually mounted on a wall with tubing connecting the indoor and outdoor units. Each room needs to have its own indoor unit.
AC unit ratings
Air conditioning units are rated on their efficiency based on how much the unit cools with each watt of electricity. This rating is the Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating (SEER) and is determined by the Air Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute. The minimum SEER for a simple split system unit is 13. The higher the SEER, the more efficiently a unit will cool your home, costing you less in electricity bills.
Another measurement to keep in mind when considering air conditioners is the size of the unit. The size is a synonym for the unit’s capacity to cool, measured in “tons”, also known as British thermal units per hour. It is actually less efficient to get a bigger unit than necessary for your space. Air conditioners are at their least efficient when they start, and if your unit does not work to capacity, it will turn off and on as needed to keep your home at a standard temperature.
Regular maintenance is important to keep your air conditioner running efficiently. Many air conditioning manufacturers suggest at least an annual service (link to the service plan page) to ensure that the ducts are clean and nothing is restricting the airflow. This is also why it is important to change your filter every month or so. A clean filter helps your air conditioner to operate at optimal levels and not waste energy. It also helps to improve your indoor air quality which is especially important if you or anyone in your family suffers from allergies or asthma.
