Air Conditioning Units: Bigger Isn’t Better

Jake Stuba

Correct Sizing of Air Conditioning Units

When it comes to AC units, bigger does not necessarily mean better. A common mistake people make is purchasing an air conditioner that’s too large for the space it’s meant to cool. While you want a unit that’s big enough to efficiently cool your home, having one that’s too large can cause its own set of issues. AC units are designed to run uninterrupted for long periods, during which time they can remove excess humidity while cooling your home. If the AC is too large, it will constantly stop and start, leading to a decreased lifespan for the unit and humidity problems inside your home. It’s important when choosing to install a new AC unit that you choose one that is the right size for your space.

When talking about ac size in this case, what we mean isn’t the dimensions or weight of your air conditioner, but rather the tonnage. Tonnage refers to the amount of cooling that the air conditioner provides for the space in which it’s installed. There are a number of factors to take into consideration when calculating the tonnage needed to cool your space, and generally it’s best left to the professionals. A professional heating and cooling technician will look at not only your home’s square footage, but also the type of insulation you have. They will also factor in the number of people living in the household, the number of doors and windows in the home, and the number of appliances that give off heat.

Not sure what AC size is right for you? An heating and air service professional can assist you in determining the size you require.

A bigger cooling system is not always better – it can lead to a humid interior and high electricity bills.
