Spring Allergies – Do Air Conditioners Help or Hurt?

Spring is a great time of year! You get to enjoy some wonderful temperatures while taking a lot of pressure off of your home’s heater or cooling system to keep you comfortable.

However, with the beautiful spring flowers and budding trees, comes those things that oftentimes aggravates allergies. The outside triggers are usually easy to identify, but are there things inside of your home that may be contributing to your spring allergies? Your air conditioner can certainly help the issue, but it can also often be a part of the problem.

Windows Open Windows Closed?

To open? Or not to open? That is the question. On days low pollen count days, yes, open your windows! It is good to let clean outdoor air circulate through your home. There is nothing better than fresh air. This helps to prevent the build-up of allergens inside your home, which helps alleviate allergies. However, when the pollen count is high, keep your windows closed, especially at night.

Be Sure You are Using the Most Effective Air Filters

It is very important to replace air filters often. Make a habit of checking them both at the beginning and the end of summer, and once in July. HEPA filters (High-Efficiency Particulate Air filters) are the only filters that are manufactured finely enough to trap allergens and keep them from circulating throughout the house. Using the right air filters will help trap a large percentage of the irritating allergens that can circulate through your house when your windows are closed.

Regular Air Conditioner Maintenance is Key

When kept clean and well maintained, air conditioners can actually help to prevent allergies. However, if your system is neglected, the air quality inside of your home suffers, and allergies worsen. Have your unit serviced often to make sure it’s in proper working order and that your filters are clean. A well-maintained air conditioner inhibits mold by lowering humidity, but it can also promote the growth of mold if not properly maintained.
